The Health Authority is a physician appointed under the provisions of the Health and Safety Code, Section 121.021, to administer state and local laws related to public health within the jurisdiction of Johnson County.
Johnson County is in need of a competent physician with a reputable professional standing who is legally qualified to practice medicine in the State of Texas and a resident of the State of Texas. To be qualified to serve as a health authority, the physician must take and subscribe to the official oath and file a copy of the oath and appointment with the Department of State Health Services.
The Health Authority is considered a state officer when performing duties prescribed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The individual holding the health authority position shall perform each duty that is necessary to implement and enforce laws to protect the public health or prescribed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The duties of this position include establishing, maintaining, and enforcing quarantine in Johnson County. The Health Authority will aid the Texas Department of State Health Services in relation to local quarantine, inspection, disease prevention, suppression, birth and death statistics and general sanitation in Johnson Count. Additional responsibilities include reporting the presence of contagious, infectious, and dangerous epidemic diseases in Johnson County. The Health Authority also reports on any subject on whom it is proper rules, requirements, and ordinances, sanitation laws, quarantine rules and vital statistics collections. This position is responsible for administering state and local laws relating to public health in Johnson County.
The Health Authority may be removed from office for cause under the personnel procedures applicable to heads of departments of Johnson County.
The Health Authority serves for a term of two years and may be appointed for successive terms.
