Johns Road and Sallys Way Information
We've received numerous calls regarding the condition of Johns Road and Sallys Way between C.R. 616 and Luisa Lane.

If you drive these roads, you know that they have been in need of major repair for awhile. This was recently made even worse because of last summer's extreme drought, causing the ground to dry out under the road and the surface to severely buckle.

The deep ruts in the pavement had reached a point of being dangerous, but it was too late in the year to rebuild the road because cooler weather will not allow asphalt or chipseal to bond to a road surface and set up properly. The decision was made to break up the deteriorated pavement and add more road base to at least level the road surface. While it may not have an asphalt surface right now, at least it is much more level and considerably safer than it was with the deep ruts.

We will allow those areas to remain gravel during the winter and early spring months and occasionally dress up the surface with a road grader as needed to keep the surface as smooth as possible. When the weather starts warming up in the spring, we will be back on the two roads to completely rebuild them from the ground up and top them with a chipseal.

We realize that some people get upset over having to drive on a gravel road, but the fact is that almost 70% of all county roads in Texas are gravel roads all the time. Johnson County is an exception because we have less than 20% gravel roads countywide. We are just asking for your patience to drive on the gravel portion until we get through the winter, then we will build you a completely new road. If you slow down a bit on the gravel portions, you should have no problems with losing control or rocks being thrown up.

Thank you for your patience!
2011 Road Building Season Is Over - We're Switching Gears
With the coming of cooler weather, what is normally considered our "Road Building Season" is over for this year. We can only spray the emulsion during the warmer months of April through October or it will not adhere to the road surface.

We are now switching gears now to focus on other areas until next year. Crews are starting to clean out ditches to allow any future rainwater to flow better. Brush is being cut back away from the roads. Culverts are replaced as necessary. Bridges are cleared of debris. And concrete projects are being completed.

We had a successful year in 2011 with 9.75 miles of county road being completely rebuilt (existing roadway ground up, more base added, concrete added to stabilize the soil, and the road shaped to completion) and 29.62 miles of county road being sealcoated. Total mileage was almost 38 miles of county road in one season. That does not include pothole repair, rebuilding of roadway edges, and levelling out of bad spots with hot mix asphalt.

The road crew at Precinct #3 has done an outstanding job this year!
