A Patrol Deputy is the most visible member of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, providing around the clock service to the citizens, businesses, and visitors. Each Deputy works to protect life and property, ensure the civil rights of individuals, maintain public peace, provide citizen assistance, enforce criminal and motor vehicle laws, and respond to emergency situations.

The Patrol Division is organized into four alternating 12 hour shifts. Each shift is commanded by a Sergeant, and one Corporal who are  assigned to assist in the supervision of the Patrol Deputies. The four shifts are defined as Days and Nights.



The Patrol Division’s primary responsibilities are to:

  • Respond to calls for service
  • Conduct preliminary investigations into crimes that are reported
  • Maintain order
  • Enforce the criminal and traffic code
  • Identify community problems
  • Deter criminal activity
  • Help in creating a safe and comfortable community in which people can live, work, play and grow

The general responsibilities of the Patrol Division include:

  • Crime prevention activities
  • Response to calls for service
  • Preliminary investigation of offenses, incidents, and conditions, including the arrest of offenders
  • Traffic direction and control
  • Regulatory activities as are required by law
  • Maintenance of public order
  • Development of positive relationships between citizens and the Sheriff’s Office
  • Reporting of information to appropriate organizational components
