Johnson County was named for Colonel Middleton T. Johnson. He was originally from South Carolina and a Legislator in Alabama before coming to Texas. He was a member of the Republic of Texas Congress, a Cavalryman in the U.S. War with Mexico, a Texas Ranger and a surveyor for early railroads going through Texas. Colonel Johnson fought with General Patrick Cleburne in the Civil War.
