TYPES OF MARKERS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
JOHNSON COUNTY HISTORIC LANDMARK PLAQUES from Johnson Co. Historical Commission
See the current Johnson Co. Historic Landmark Plaque Chair for application and eligibility requirements (Rev. June 2025)
These plaques may or may not be accompanied by a non-metallic, laser cut ‘narrative’ telling the story of the site.
JCHC provides these markers and narrative plaques at no charge to recipients. A dedication ceremony is often held.
TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS from Texas Historical Commission
SEE HTTPS://THC.TEXAS.GOV/SITES/DEFAULT/FILES/2025-03/MARKERS_PROCEDURES.PDF
for full instructions how to apply, when applications are accepted, criteria for the narrative, examples, etc.
Large THM cost approx. $2,500 with post and require funding other than the portion JCHC can donate.
THM take approx. 2 years after application is made online to THC.
ALL applications must go through the current JCHC Chair (and County Marker Chair if one has been appointed) and be processed online by JCHC. Anyone can apply, but they must follow that procedure.
Subject markers, Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks, and Historic Cemetery status fall under this category.
IF a THM will be applied for at a site that includes a cemetery, Historic Cemetery status is required before the application can be made for a Texas Historic Marker.
TEXAS TREASURE BUSINESS AWARDS from Texas Historical Commission
